LAND TO SEA
The village of Ringmore sits in a valley, surrounded by pastoral beauty and the wildness of the sea nearby. These pictures are the result of walks with my Border Terrier Rosie. I am fascinated by the detail at my feet, the play of light on foliage and the grandeur and majesty of the sea. I am in awe of this landscape, it reflects my moods and provides metaphors for my emotions.
The Sea, The Sea monoprints were made with the Iris Murdoch novel of that name in mind. I draw parallels to the main character's retreat to be near the sea to my own journey to Ringmore. The title of the book also references a French poem translated as ‘The Graveyard by the Sea’ and the fourth line states ‘The Sea, The Sea, forever re-starting’. A typical Murdoch ending to the novel, where this no defined conclusion to the main characters situation, a direct analogy to the renewable energy of the sea.
