Portfolios > A WALK IN THE WOODS

These works result from a series of local woodland visits I have made since moving to Mid-Wales in September 2013. The themes have developed initially from figurative drawings into abstract veils, in which suggestions of tree forms act as tropes for a felt sense of isolation and estrangement.

Trees and woodland, bent and deformed by the weather and environment are a continuing theme to the work I have being exploring since starting my MA studies in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University School of Art.

Most recently I have been working with graphite, charcoal and soft pencils, enjoying the process of layering veils of imagery and lifting out to reveal marks below. I am also incorporating grids, finely drawn in ink, initially to add tone, but also to organise the image.

The next stage in developing these images happens in printmaking, both in etching and lithography.
